Originally presented as a slide show presentation for Eastern Washington University class "Recreation Therapy for People with Disabilities". This video is a presentation on the hypothetical use of role-playing games to help a patient with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) progress through various recovery stages. This includes Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA), Computer-based RPG, Tabletop, and Live-action role-play (LARP).
Don't be cruel, if for no other reason than to not be cruel to people with stutters or other speech challenges, use the initialism TRPG not TTRPG. Additionally for consistency of documentation and professional language efficiency. All of RPG Research's documentation, as well as the Certified Role-Playing Game Professional documentation follow this standardized approach. Until recently, it seemed pretty standard to use TRPG, but in the last few years, for some strange reason an increasing number of people are starting to use TTRPG with 2 Ts. Why?
Variations of this happen so often that I generally don't bother posting about it anymore. Typically anywhere from once per month to once per week, I encounter something in the ballpark of these negative attitudes about role-playing gamers/gaming from the inculcated myths. But this past Friday was exceptional, with 3 separate families forbidding their children!
There have been an increasing number of articles (and people?) protesting against the Dungeons & Dragons books and settings titled "Oriental Adventures". What are some of the issues expressed? What are the published past and currently in-print alternatives (are there any)?

In conversation on Facebook yesterday, I mentioned, as I have done a number of times in recent years, about my reading two different research reports about inpatient groups and role-playing gaming. I seemed to recall the papers mentioning they were schizophrenic, and one report was a disaster, while the other was an outstanding success....

Though this is a computer-based RPG (Role-Playing Game) study, pending testing with tabletop, it seems possible that it could apply in tabletop RPG, LARP (Live-Action Role-Playing), and maybe even CYOA (Choose Your Own Adventure) forms of RPG as well? In a TED talk by Peter Doolittle, he talked about two memory constructs, multitasking and working memory, and in this particular talk focused on Working Memory. This is something where role-playing games may support his recommendations in trying to improve how important things are remembered...

After multiple requests from inmates, and discussions with others, we are finally going to begin undertaking plans for trying to convince the Department of Corrections in multiple states to modify or remove their ban on role-playing games in prisons and related detention and mental health facilities...
Been 15+ years, since founding the RPG Research Project in 2004, leading up to the national conference, and now it is official!

RPG Research is a 501(c)3 research and human services charitable organization, 100% volunteer run, providing community programs using collaborative music and games to help various populations including: ADHD, anxiety, ASD, at-risk populations, brain injuries, CP, Deaf/HoH, depression, mental health, muscular dystrophy, substance dependency transition, and many others.
In our consideration of games research and community game offerings, we are trying to find the "right" Old West TRPG, that does not have magic or science fiction or other blended genres. Here is where we will post updates on our search.

Congratulations to all of us! After months and months of slogging away, I have finally launched the new RPG Research website on Plone 5. There is much more to do, especially getting all the content from the old servers moved here, but we hope you enjoy the new look and feel.
